ClassRead Terms of Use
Version 1 · 18 August 2026
ClassRead is a reading-practice app for schools. A teacher creates a class,
adds their students, and assigns reading passages. A student reads aloud, the
app records and scores the reading, and the teacher reviews it.
These terms cover what you may put into ClassRead and how you must behave in
it. They apply to teachers and to students. A short version written for
children is at the end.
Who may use ClassRead
- Teachers use ClassRead on behalf of a school, and must be authorised by
that school to create accounts for the students they teach.
- Students do not create their own accounts. A teacher creates each one,
and a student signs in with a class code, a username and a PIN.
- ClassRead is not for personal or public use, and is not a social network.
There is no way to find, follow, message or contact anyone outside your
own class.
Content you create
Three kinds of content are created inside ClassRead:
- Passages a teacher writes for their own students.
- Feedback and notes a teacher writes about a reading.
- Voice recordings a student makes while reading aloud.
You keep whatever rights you already have in what you write or record.
ClassRead stores it in order to run the service — to show a passage to the
students it is assigned to, to score a reading, and to play a recording back to
the student and their teacher. Nothing is published, sold, used for advertising,
or shown to anyone outside the class it belongs to.
What is not allowed
ClassRead is used by children, including children under 13.
The rules below are absolute and apply to every teacher and every student.
You must not create, upload, record or share anything that:
- is sexual, sexually suggestive, or that sexualises a child in any way;
- is violent, threatening, or encourages harm to anyone including
self-harm;
- bullies, harasses, humiliates, intimidates or targets a person;
- is hateful or demeaning towards anyone because of race, ethnicity,
religion, nationality, disability, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age,
caste, or any similar characteristic;
- is obscene, profane or otherwise unsuitable for a classroom of the age
you are teaching;
- promotes drugs, alcohol, tobacco, weapons, gambling or other adult
activity;
- is illegal, infringes someone else's copyright, or discloses someone
else's personal information;
- is advertising, spam, a link, or anything unrelated to reading
practice.
You must also not:
- use another person's account, or let someone use yours;
- record anyone who has not agreed to be recorded, or record anything other
than the passage being read;
- use ClassRead to contact, groom, or build a relationship with a child
outside the ordinary teacher–pupil relationship your school
authorises;
- attempt to reach another teacher's classes, students, recordings or
passages;
- attempt to break, probe or work around the app's security.
Reporting
If you see or hear something that breaks these rules, report it in the app.
A student can report a passage, a piece of feedback, or their teacher, from the
screen where they meet it. A teacher can report a recording or a student.
Reports go to ClassRead and cannot be read, changed or deleted by anyone
using the app — including the person the report is about, and including the
person who made it.
If a child is at risk, tell an adult at the school as well. ClassRead is not
an emergency service and cannot intervene in the classroom.
What ClassRead may do about a breach
ClassRead reviews reports and may, depending on what it finds:
- remove a passage, a piece of feedback, or a recording;
- suspend or delete a teacher's account, and with it the classes and
student accounts under it;
- contact the school;
- report the matter to the authorities where a child appears to be at
risk.
A teacher can remove a student's account and recordings at any time, and can
delete their own account and everything under it from the app.
No warranty, and what ClassRead is not
ClassRead scores a reading automatically and the score is an aid to a
teacher's judgement, not an assessment in its own right. It may be wrong,
particularly with background noise, accents it handles poorly, or a very quiet
reader. It is not a diagnosis of any condition and must not be used as one.
ClassRead is provided as it is. It is free, it takes no payments, and it
carries no advertising.
Changes to these terms
If these rules change in a way that matters, you will be asked to read and
accept them again in the app before you continue creating content. The version
number at the top of this page changes when that happens.
Rules for students
The short version, for readers.
- Read the passage your teacher gave you. That is all the recording is
for.
- Do not say unkind, rude or scary things while you are recording.
- Do not record anyone else, and do not record when someone else is
talking.
- Only you and your teacher can hear your recording.
- If something in ClassRead upsets you, use Tell someone about
this. Then tell a grown-up at school too.
