ClassRead Privacy Policy

Last updated 18 August 2026

ClassRead is a reading-practice app for schools. A teacher creates a class, adds their students, and assigns reading passages. A student reads a passage aloud, the app records it, and the recording is compared with the passage to produce an accuracy and reading-speed result the teacher can review.

This policy describes exactly what ClassRead collects, why, where it is stored, and how to have it deleted. It is written to match what the app actually does.

ClassRead contains no advertising. There are no ads, no advertising SDKs, no third-party analytics, and no tracking for advertising purposes. Nothing collected by ClassRead is sold, and nothing is shared with any third party for their own purposes.

Who holds the data

ClassRead is operated by the developer of ClassRead, contactable at support.classread@gmail.com.

Where ClassRead is used by a school, the school decides which students are added and remains responsible for obtaining any parental consent required in its jurisdiction. ClassRead processes that information on the teacher's and school's behalf.

School-authorised use

ClassRead has no way to reach a parent directly. A child provides no email address and no contact details of any kind, and the app never asks for any. It is therefore built for school-authorised use: a school, acting through a teacher, creates accounts for its own pupils for a classroom purpose, and gives whatever notice or obtains whatever consent the law where it operates requires.

Before a teacher can create their first student account, ClassRead shows them what is stored about a child, what is never asked of a child, who can see it, and a link to this policy. They must then confirm two things separately:

No child account can be created until both are confirmed, and the confirmation is recorded against the teacher's account with the date and the version of the wording agreed to.

For schools. ClassRead acts on your instructions in respect of student data. It is not used to build profiles, is never sold, and is never used for advertising. If your school needs a data processing agreement, or needs student data exported or deleted, write to support.classread@gmail.com.
For parents and guardians. If your child uses ClassRead at school and you want to see what is held about them, or have it deleted, the fastest route is your child's teacher, who can delete the account and every recording immediately from within the app. You can also write to the address above.

What is collected

Teacher accounts

DataWhy
Email addressTo sign in and to reset a password
Full nameShown in the app so a teacher recognises their own account
School name (optional)Provided by the teacher if they choose to

A teacher's password is handled entirely by Google Firebase Authentication. ClassRead never sees, stores or transmits it.

Student accounts

Students do not create their own accounts and do not provide an email address, a phone number or any contact detail. A teacher creates each student account, and it consists of:

DataWhy
Display name, as typed by the teacherSo the teacher can tell their students apart
A username, chosen by the teacherUsed with a class code to sign in
Grade levelTo offer passages at a suitable reading level
A four-digit PINSo a young child can sign in without a password

The PIN is never stored in a readable form. It is stored only as a salted hash produced with scrypt, which cannot be reversed to recover the PIN. It is shown once to the teacher when the account is created or the PIN is reset, and cannot be retrieved afterwards.

Reading assessments

DataWhy
An audio recording of the student reading aloudSo the reading can be scored, and so the student and teacher can listen back
The words recognised from that recordingTo compare what was read with the passage
Accuracy, reading speed and durationThe result shown to the student and the teacher
Which words were missed or substitutedSo the student can practise them
A teacher's private note and any feedback they choose to shareWritten by the teacher; the private note is never shown to the student

What is not collected

The microphone and recordings

ClassRead asks for microphone access only on the screen where a reading test begins, and only after the app has explained on screen that the student's reading will be recorded and who can listen to it. It is never requested when the app starts. The microphone is used only while a reading test is in progress. ClassRead does not listen at any other time.

Speech recognition runs on the device. The recording is not sent to any speech-recognition service, and no third party receives it.

A recording is uploaded so that the student and their teacher can play it back later. It is stored outside any publicly reachable directory, and there is no web address that will return it. Every playback request must carry the signed-in user's credentials, and the server permits only two people: the student who made the recording, and the teacher who owns that student's account. Another teacher cannot retrieve it even if they know its identifier.

A recording is written once and cannot be replaced, so an assessment's audio always matches the result recorded against it.

Where data is stored

WhatWhere
Sign-in accountsGoogle Firebase Authentication
Teacher, class, student, assignment and result recordsGoogle Cloud Firestore
Audio recordingsA private directory on ClassRead's own server, hosted at Hostinger
Downloaded speech model and the current recording in progressPrivate storage on the device

Google Firebase is used as an infrastructure provider under Google's terms. All traffic between the app and every server is encrypted with HTTPS.

Other connections the app makes

Two further connections are worth naming, because being accurate matters more than the list looking short:

How long data is kept

Children's data is not kept longer than the teaching it was collected for needs. Different things are needed for different lengths of time, so they are kept for different lengths of time.

Voice recordings: one year, then deleted automatically

A recording of a child reading is the most personal thing ClassRead holds, and it is useful for a bounded time — a teacher listens to it to hear how a child read, and compares it with earlier readings across a school year.

Every recording is deleted one year after it is made. This happens automatically, on a daily schedule. Nobody has to ask for it, no teacher has to remember, and it happens whether or not the account is still in use.

The reading result — the score, the reading speed and which words the child found difficult — is kept when the recording is deleted. That result is the educational record the school needs, and it reveals far less about a child than a recording of their voice does. In the app, a reading whose recording has passed its year is shown as "This recording was deleted after its one-year retention period. The reading result is kept."

Results and account details: while the account exists

A student's results and account details are kept while the teacher keeps the account, because progress over time is the whole purpose of the app. When the account goes, they go with it.

Deletion, whenever it is asked for

Deletion is immediate and cannot be undone. There is no archive copy and no recovery period. This is in addition to the automatic one-year deletion of recordings, not instead of it.

How to delete data

In the app

A teacher can delete their whole account from the menu in the top-right of any teacher screen, under Delete my account. A teacher can delete an individual student from that student's page.

Without the app

A request can be made at classread.agentassisthub.com/delete-account, or by emailing support.classread@gmail.com.

For a parent or guardian

A parent or guardian who wants their child's account and recordings deleted should ask the child's teacher, who can do it immediately, or email the address above. A request will be actioned within 30 days, and normally much sooner.

Children

ClassRead is intended for use in a school, directed by a teacher, and covers reading levels from kindergarten upward. It is therefore used by children, including children under 13.

Schools are responsible for any parental notice or consent their jurisdiction requires before adding a student, and are asked to confirm this in the app before any child account can be created — see "School-authorised use" above.

ClassRead does not allow a child to create their own account. If you believe a child has an account that their school did not create, write to support.classread@gmail.com and it will be removed.

Reporting a concern

Teachers can write their own reading passages and can leave feedback that the student sees. Students record themselves reading, and their own teacher can listen. That content stays inside one class — no child sees another child's work, and no teacher sees another teacher's — but it is still one person's words reaching another, so there is a way to raise a concern about it.

A student can report a passage or a piece of feedback, and can report their teacher, from the screen where they meet it. A teacher can report a recording or a student. A report records what was reported, who raised it and why, and is reviewed by ClassRead.

Reports cannot be read, changed or deleted by anyone using the app — including the person who raised the concern, so it cannot be withdrawn under pressure, and including the person it names, who cannot discover that it exists.

If a child is at risk, please also tell an adult at the school. ClassRead is not an emergency service.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the date at the top will be updated. A change that materially affects what is collected or how it is used will be announced in the app before it takes effect.
